景颇族的来源与青藏高原上古代氐羌人有关。唐代，其先民以“寻传蛮”、“高黎贡人”见诸于汉文史籍，自元、明、清至新中国成立前，又先后出现了“峨昌”、“遮些”、“野人”等名称。新中国成立后，经民族识别，确认为景颇族。

景颇族的先民与古代的氐、羌有关，以前居住在康藏高原南部山区，7-9世纪沿横断山脉南迁。东部景颇在澜沧江以东，金沙江地区；西部景颇在澜沧江以西至缅甸境内。15-16世纪，由于战争大量的东部族人大规模西迁；16世纪后大量移居德宏地区，多与德昂、阿昌、傈僳、汉等民族杂居。现在的景颇族中景颇支、浪峨支、瓦支、喇期支原先是同一民族的不同部落。

景颇族主要有五个支系，即景颇、载瓦、勒期、浪峨（浪速）、波拉。多数地区不同支系的人杂住在一起。景颇支系的语言属汉藏语系藏缅语族景颇语支，载瓦等四个支系的语言比较接近，同属藏缅语族缅语支。文字有景颇文和载瓦文两种，系以拉丁字母为基础的拼音文字，前者创制于19世纪末，后者创制于1957年。
